Professor Larry Diamond reflection

Professor Larry Diamond’s presentation helped me get a better understanding of the relationship between political systems and social development, as well as the current state of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was particularly nice to hear some of the steps in solving political problems that Professor Diamond proposed. Among them he recommended generating incentives for better, more accountable, and more transparent government and implementing new technologies, such as mobile phones, that serve to empower locals. Moreover, Diamond’s presentation gave me a better understanding of the role that political science and public policy play in driving social development. With that, I’m more interested in learning more about the political climate in Bangladesh and specifically in Dhaka to better understand how our project fits into the government’s goals and how we can best work with stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of our project.
