Week 3: Larry Diamond

One statement from Larry Diamond’s book “The Spirit of Democracy” really stuck out to me: “[In a democracy] citizens see one anther as political equals and believe in equality of opportunity, even though they recognize that perfect equality of outcomes can never be obtained.”  I think this has something important to say about our project – we are striving to provide the people of the Dhaka slum equal opportunity and not trying to force a certain outcome. In other words, it is our job to make access to clean water possible, but it is their freedom to use it or not. We are having some concerns if the people of Dhaka are going to accept this “medicine” in their water and in the end we are going to have to respect their right to decide for themselves.  Hopefully we will be able to come up with a device that they will want to use!
