Week 6

The seminar this week was really different – more of a conversation and lots of participation rather than just a lecture presentation.  Both the class discussions and the reading touched on some very interesting topics.  I particularly liked the idea of ABCD – Asset Based Community Development.  It is so true that most of the time when it comes to community development and design people tend to focus on needs rather than assets so this was a new and refreshing was to think about community development. However, it also has some ramifications for our project; asset based community development is an approach that focuses on what a community already has rather than what it needs and also specifies that the desire for change needs to originate from the community itself. In our case, we are outsiders trying to get the people of the slums of Dhaka to use our device to fix a problem they don’t think they have.
